The terminal is in the same vein-organic, futuristic, show-stopping. The architect was Eero Saarinen, who had pushed the Utzon design for the Sydney Opera House.
The interior was an essay in design integrity, with everything from the curvy information boards to the swooping stairways showing the same dedication to the fluid line. Hunkered down like a gigantic beetle, its wings slightly raised, it looked almost as though it might take off rather than the jets parked on the tarmac behind. And this terminal removed all doubt that this was the way of the future. It opened in 1962, at the moment when jets were about to revolutionise international travel, killing off ocean liners and introducing cheap air transport. Don't we need this sense of occasion, especially now we know that air transport is less than glamorous?
